New NAS Synology DS 209

Synology 207+

I recently picked-up a Synology DS 209. What a wonderful little NAS box this thing is. I dropped two 1 TB SATA drives into the unit and set-up was in less than ten minutes. This of course does not count the time required to format both the drives. The ajax powered Admin control panel is simple yet powerful. One of the best options for me about this box was the fact that there is a built-in iTunes server. So much easier to share the media amongst the family. I only say 5 out of 5 stars for this piece of hardware from my experience.

Sports talk on the Dahlcast

Posted by admin to Uncategorized

I moved away from Chicago in ’89 and one of the things I missed the most was listening to Steve Dahl. Well, thanks to Al Gore and his high geekness Mark Cuban I was able to listening to Steve via the Internet. Times change and radio stations make some rather curious choices. So, Steve was no longer on the air and he decided to take some time off and recharge.

Now the Stever is back and podcasting from his basement and sounding as good as ever. He still has the same support crew. Buzz is no longer with him but makes regular visits via the phone. Steve’s weekly calls with Tom Thayer and Jeff Joniak are great. Steve likes to talk as if he is one level above some the other people at either the Bears or Blackhawks games but all he really is a true and passionate sports fan.

From Disco Demolition to the greatness of the Dahlcast all I can say is thank you for hours of laughs.

Evernote

Evernote

I recently was talking with my wife, who has turned into a blogging machine, about Evertnote. At first I was not really impressed. It was not portable so it really did not interest me. A couple of weeks ago I came across a portable version of it that I can load and leave on my USB drive. Now I am using it and really liking it. I really enjoy the ability to keep all the little things I seem to collect on a daily basis in one place. So, as my living my life off of my USB drive continues I keep finding useful tools to install on it. Good thing I got a 16 Gb USB flash drive.

My continued travels with MAME

Posted by admin to Uncategorized
MAME
Image via Wikipedia

I have been on the multi-year quest to get my MAME machine up and running doing all the things that I have been thinking of. It appears that I have hit the wall in dealing with the ROMs and the Front-End interface. I purchase a set of the DVDs with all the ROMs and the Hard Disk Image files. I have been unable to get all the ROMs to show up as green, not even a decent percentage of them. I understand that I can not expect 100% of the ROMs to be fully functional but better than 10% would be nice.

I am fully aware that this effort is done mostly by volunteers and most of the software is open source. This being the case I can only say this with complete honesty, “I am missing something and it is my own fault that I am having so many problems.” So, the battle continues and I will continue my exhausting search of the web and forums to get my answers to my questions. This is one of those times I wish had a MAME mentor.

I must continue my plan to take over the world or at least my little MAME world.

Another TV show I thought of and did not act upon

Posted by admin to Uncategorized

I have always enjoyed tailgating at various sporting events. A couple of years ago when I went to a blogging seminar I spoke to a couple people about my idea for a video podcast on the subject. They said that it sounded like a pretty good idea and something that I should pursue. So, the other night I was looking through the online cable guide and came across a show on a network called MavTV. Here it is American Tailgater There is a brief mention of it. I really have not been able to find to much on the web talking about the channel.

PSPVC now at version 3.71 (my issues fixed)

Posted by admin to Uncategorized

I was having some problems with this PSP video conversion software. I posted my issue in the authors forum and he asked me to post a log file. Prior to getting him the log file he released a new version and my issues were resolved.

This is just another example of a talented programmer creating something that can be enjoyed by the masses.

Data recovered from both NAS drives

Posted by admin to Uncategorized

Upon removing both the hard drives from the NAS unit I came to realize that now I needed to get the data from it. After using a couple of different programs, I was told about this software. It took almost 12 hours to run per 1 Tb drive but it recovered almost 95% of the data. So, I am pretty happy about that.

So, give it a try. It was well worth it for me.

R.I.P. HP WorldBook NAS

Posted by admin to Uncategorized

My HP WorldBook is gone. The hard drives are still alive but the enclosure and board inside are dead. My thoughts are that this unit is was a dud. But then again, I have never been a big fan of HP. So, I move each 1 TB drive into one of my desktop boxes.

PSP Video file conversion follow-up

Posted by admin to Uncategorized

Just a quick follow-up about PSP video conversion. The latest release of PSPVC is 3.70. I am having a couple of issues with it and I am not really sure it is the fault of the software. In fact, I am pretty sure that it is user error.

Here are my issues. First, in order to convert 100% of any input file I have to use the force conversion profile. Second, batch file conversions from a folder never work. Two input files and I only get two output files that play five minutes into the file.

I will post again when I have more details.

PSP Video Conversion Software

Posted by admin to Uncategorized

For a while now I have been trying to find a video conversion program for the PSP that is reliable and output a nice clean file. For the sometime I was using both PSP Video 9 and 3G converter. After searching for what seems like a year in the forums I was lucky and came across a program called PSPVC. It is a great program and very powerful as well. It has this wonderful little option to force convert. Where others programs throws up failures and stops, PSPVC pushes right through it.
